Adult Cat Wellness

Adult feline wellness plan 8 years and beyond.

The veterinarian and staff at Wilderness Trace Veterinary Clinic are dedicated to enhancing the quality of your cat’s life from their first kitten visit through their senior years.

It is important to realize that the aging process is not a “disease”. It is the normal slowdown of the body’s functions such as a decreased metabolism, a decreased ability to fight off disease, increased tissue fragility, loss of muscle mass, and decreased joint flexibility. Since the cat’s body ages more rapidly than a human body, bi-annual physical exams will help discover problems in animals that may “appear” to be healthy. Remember that prevention and early intervention are much more cost-effective than the treatment of clinical disease. Routine physical exams of your “senior” cat will help extend the years that you enjoy with your companion.

Senior Wellness Profiles

The following tests are highly recommended to determine if your cat’s liver, kidneys, and thyroid are operating properly, as well as the detection of hormonal problems such as diabetes.

These tests help establish a baseline value that can be used for comparisons when changes occur. They can identify existing health problems that aren’t detected through a physical exam alone and assist with monitoring progress during the treatment of disease.

Our comprehensive senior wellness profile includes:

Complete blood count (CBC): evaluates the cellular components of the bloodstream

Red blood cells (RBC) carry oxygen to the body's organs

White blood cells (WBC) are the “soldiers” of the body that fight infection

Urinalysis: analysis of the urine is effective for detecting problems with the kidneys, diabetes, and other metabolic diseases.

Heart failureRed blood cells (RBC) carry oxygen to the body organs

Biochemistries: Allows your veterinarian to detect problems with the kidneys, liver, thyroid, pancreas, and other glands in the body.

Electrolytes: abnormalities of electrolytes, such as sodium, calcium, phosphorous, and potassium, can affect many organ systems in the body.

Additional tests may be needed depending on the outcome of the bloodwork. Additional tests may include X-rays, ultrasound, blood pressure, or eye testing. If you have any questions about our services, please contact us today at (859) 854-5055

Adult Cat Food

Although dry foods are more convenient, they should be considered the second choice for cat food.

Dry foods have a higher carbohydrate count than is optimal and the protein choice tends to be plant and not animal-based.

High carbs and plant protein can lead to weight gain and digestive issues, especially in older, less active cats. Prescription dry foods can be an excellent choice for cats with allergies, certain health conditions, and as part of a diet containing canned or fresh food.

Canned cat foods can have a nutrient profile that mimics the kind of diet cats would choose in the wild. Canned food is usually animal-based and usually has a low carbohydrate count and high water amount.

Fresh cat food diets are high in unprocessed proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water, and are also low in carbohydrates. These tend to be the most expensive choice of diet. Cats are reluctant to accept the change in food types and textures.

Senior Cat Food

Cats begin transitioning from adulthood to the mature, senior stages of life at about 7 years of age.

This change causes a cat’s weight, skin, joints, teeth, and internal organs to change.

If your cat is doing well on its current diet, then there may not be a need to change foods. Some brands make senior cat food that is specifically formulated to deliver ingredients that are more easily digested than standard adult cat foods.

Senior cats are more likely to develop health issues related to intestines and kidney disease.
